How to become an International Mediator

How to become a member of the KIMC panel of international mediators

Legal professionals with considerable experience in mediation may apply to become a member of the Korea International Mediation Centre (“KIMC”) panel of international mediators. Non-lawyers like business executives and career diplomats may also apply to become a member of the KIMC panel of international mediators. Notably, those non-lawyer mediators are expected to facilitate more amicable dispute settlement by relying on their expertise and experiences from past business dealings or diplomatic negotiations. The KIMC wholeheartedly welcomes any applicant, lawyer or non-lawyer, as a candidate for the KIMC panel of international mediators. However, it must be recognized that the role of an international mediator entails the ability not only to empathize with the disputing parties but also to encourage creative solutions by finding their implicit real interests hidden behind their explicitly opposing positions. Most importantly, it is essential for every applicant to understand that the DNA of mediation is distinctively different from that of litigation or other types of ADR.
